Edition & Appliance Selection

We recommend the right edition (Community or Enterprise) and appliance series: Mini for branch offices, R-Series for cost-optimised multi-purpose, H-Series for power-efficient HA, M-Series for capacity-optimised enterprise, or F-Series for NVMe-intensive performance workloads.

Pool Design & Hardware Sourcing

We design the ZFS pool topology (RAIDZ2 recommended for production), select drives (SAS/SATA HDDs, SATA/NVMe SSDs), specify expansion shelves, and supply iXsystems-certified TrueNAS Enterprise appliances as an authorised reseller partner, or custom Supermicro hardware. TrueNAS Installation & Configuration

What's the difference between TrueNAS Community Edition and Enterprise Edition?

TrueNAS Community Edition is the free, open-source version — software-only, no licence cost, ideal for SMEs, startups, and businesses that want enterprise storage features without enterprise price tags. TrueNAS Enterprise Edition pairs the same TrueNAS software with iXsystems-certified hardware appliances, 24/7 enterprise support from iXsystems, and optional HA dual-controller configurations. Think: Community for cost-conscious deployments, Enterprise for mission-critical workloads where downtime has a dollar cost.

Which TrueNAS appliance series is right for my business?

It depends on your workload: Mini Series is ideal for small businesses, branch offices, and quiet environments (up to 264TB, Mini Tower or 2U). R-Series suits multi-purpose SME and mid-market workloads (up to 5PB, 1U–12U). H-Series offers power-optimised HA for small-to-medium enterprise (up to 2.5PB, optional dual controllers). M-Series is the capacity-optimised enterprise platform (up to 30PB, dual controllers). Can TrueNAS replace a Windows file server?

For many file-sharing needs, yes. TrueNAS serves SMB shares and joins Active Directory, and TrueNAS documentation recommends Active Directory for business SMB deployments. Application roles that run on Windows Server, such as print services or line-of-business software, are assessed separately before any migration.

Is TrueNAS a backup by itself?

No. TrueNAS is a strong backup target and snapshot platform, but its own documentation says RAID and disk redundancy are not substitutes for a backup strategy. A snapshot sits on the same pool as its data, so you still need a replicated offsite copy, restricted access and tested restores.

Is TrueNAS suitable for VMware or Hyper-V shared storage?

TrueNAS can present iSCSI LUNs to VMware vSphere and Hyper-V hosts. We configure iSCSI multipath (MPIO) for redundancy, and we confirm VAAI and multipath support for your TrueNAS version during assessment.

How does TrueNAS handle high availability?

TrueNAS Enterprise H-Series, M-Series, and F-Series support optional HA dual-controller configurations with synchronous NVDIMM write mirroring between controllers. If one controller fails, the other takes over. iXsystems rates its dual-controller HA appliances for 99.999% availability; real uptime also depends on power, network and maintenance.

What storage protocols does TrueNAS support?

TrueNAS supports the full enterprise protocol stack in a single system: SMB 2/3 (Windows file sharing with SMB Multi-channel), NFSv3/v4 (Linux/Unix/VMware), iSCSI (SAN block storage), Fibre Channel (SAN via FC HBAs on Enterprise appliances), S3-compatible object storage via Distributed MinIO, rsync, WebDAV, HTTP, and FTP.

Do you supply the hardware or just configure software?

Both. As an authorised TrueNAS reseller partner, we supply iXsystems-certified appliances for Enterprise Edition (recommended for warranty and validated driver support). For Community Edition deployments, we build custom Supermicro systems on TrueNAS-compatible hardware. Lead time depends on the model and is confirmed in the quotation. We handle racking and cabling.

How do snapshots and replication work?

TrueNAS takes instant ZFS snapshots (space-efficient, copy-on-write — no performance impact) on automated schedules (e.g. hourly for 24 hours, daily for 30 days). Snapshots can be replicated to a second TrueNAS system at a DR site, or to cloud object storage (Backblaze B2, Wasabi S3) via encrypted ZFS send/receive with auto-resume on interrupted connections.

How much capacity can TrueNAS handle?

OpenZFS itself scales far beyond any single appliance. iXsystems appliances range from the Mini Series (up to 264TB) through the R-Series (up to 5PB) and H-Series (up to 2.5PB) to the M-Series (up to 30PB with expansion shelves) and the all-NVMe F-Series (up to 10PB). Many small and mid-sized deployments start on a Mini or R-Series system, and we size from your assessment.
